The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria acknowledges the need for improving the standard of effective Transport Management covering all modes of transport road, rail, maritime, aviation and pipeline. The Institute’s education policy is designed to raise the standard of professionalism within Transport management at all levels, thus encouraging those commencing a career within the industry and improving the knowledge and skills of those already engaged in Transport.
This syllabus incorporates both the theory and practical experience, which by its uniqueness, attains the objective of a high standard of professionalism in transport and logistics management. In other words, the syllabus provides an integrated and progressive system towards Professional Graduate Diploma work with emphasis on professional competence. Thus, as a professional Transportant, obtaining a credible professional transport qualification will offer a great opportunity to a large number of potential candidates not only in Nigeria but also within West Africa (ECOWAS) sub region and beyond.
The course aims and objectives have been designed to acquaint candidates / members with the basic principles of transport and broader knowledge of transport management and administration, the operation of all modes of transport in both developing countries, arising from rapidly changing world of transport.
Specifically, the course has been planned for middle and senior management positions in the transport and allied industry. It will be of immense benefits to Federal/State Ministries and Local Government officers as well as those in the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air force and Police) dealing with transport, logistics and supply, Petroleum/Oil & Gas, Banking, Communication, Engineering and Manufacturing industries who are concerned with the management of transport, logistics and physical distribution. The course will equally be of importance to those engaged in transport education and training, research and development, policy maker, transport planners and transport consultants.
Thus, the main objectives are to provide an awareness and understanding of the interrelationship between transport development and many other relevant aspect of our economic activity in developing countries, and to ensure that candidates/members become conversant with the techniques of transport planning and the operation which are suitable and relevant to developing countries. To achieve these objectives, the course content is both practical and theoretical with considerable emphasis being placed on learning through assessment of transport project or case studies from the developing world.
The Institute’s professional examination is designed to provide a standard of education from which candidates can both build and develop a worthwhile practical career in transport management and administration AT ALL LEVELS. Below are the four stages of professional qualifying examinations which are held in June and December each year.
Every applicant for registration as student will be required to submit acceptable evidence that he/she has obtained approved educational qualifications. The following educational qualifications will be accepted for this purpose.
A. FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION LEVEL
Five (5) Credit passes in GCE/SSCE O’Level or its equivalents in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any two Science or Social science
Candidates with 5 years of experience can be accepted with 4 Credit Passes in GCE/SSCE O’Level or its equivalents including Mathematics, and English Language
B. PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA EXAMINATION LEVEL
CIOTA Foundation / Intermediate Certificates of a recognized body
Accredited Diploma in Transport Management, Shipping Management, Travel & Tourism, Freight forwarding, Economics, Geography, Marketing, Business Studies, etc.
C. PROFESSIONAL ADVANCED DIPLOMA EXAMINATION LEVEL
CIOTA Professional Diploma, Professional Diploma Part 1 Certificates of CIOTA, CILT, CIS body or allied Institution
Advanced Diploma, HND, B.Sc, PGD/MBA and other relevant qualifications of equivalent status in Economics, Marketing, Business Administration, Engineering, Law e.t.c., with at least 4 years working experience in related Transport Industry.
D. POSTGRADUATE PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA FINAL EXAMINATION LEVEL
CIOTA Professional Advanced Diploma or the final Examination Certificate of a recognized allied bodies in Transport
HND, B.Sc, PGD / M.Sc / MBA from a recognized Institution and other relevant qualifications of equivalent status in Transport Management, Air Transport Management, Maritime Transport Management, Rail Transport Management, Logistics & Supply Chain, Transport Engineering, International Trade, Geography, Urban & Regional Planning, with at least 2 years working experience.
A. Foundation Certificate Examination
The Certificate Examinations level focuses on the following modules. The course culminates in a two part of written examinations of the modules each. Successful completion of the Foundation Stage examinations qualifies you to apply for Professional Diploma Qualifying Examinations of the Institute.

To sit for the examinations, you will need to have achieved or been exempted from the Foundation and Professional Diploma Stage One Examinations modules respectively. Successful completion of the Professional Advanced Diploma in Transport Management and Administration examinations qualifies you for the award of ‘‘Associate Membership’’ of the Institute, and gives you eligibility to apply for Professional Graduate Diploma Final Qualifying Examinations.
