ORIGIN - 1944

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) formally known as the Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (IOTA), is the leading and premier Chartered professional transport body in Nigeria providing training, membership and certification of transport professionals. First established in Great Britain, United Kingdom in 1944 as a professional body dedicated to promoting education to serve the emerging requirements of transport administration.

INCORPORATION - 1986

It was incorporated in Nigeria in September, 1986 under the Land Perpetual Succession Act Cap 98 with the sole aim of promoting education and the standards of knowledge in controlling and regulating the practices of efficient transport management and administration.​

Enactment - 2019

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria establishment Act was enacted as an Act of National Assembly on the 22nd May, 2019 with Federal Government Act No. 27 of 2019 – as a Body corporate with perpetual succession, charged with the responsibility of advancing the study, training and practice of transport management and administration in Nigeria; and for other related matters.

 

Conferment

The Act confers a sectoral professional regulatory responsibility on CIOTA, making it the prime and pioneer Institute in the Transport sector in Nigeria. In addition to the above stated responsibilities, CIOTA has also been approved to set up a Council for the Registration of Transportants (CORTRANS), having the powers to regulate and control the practice of professional transport management and administration in ALL ITS RAMIFICATIONS in Nigeria.
